PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Background:
Basic MCJROTC unit was activated in 1977 and is one of over 200+ units sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. Basic MCJROTC has been designated as a "Naval Honor School" 16 times and has received state and national recognition and honors. The Senior Marine Instructor and Marine Instructors are retired Marines with over 80 years of combined military service and 35 years at Basic High School. They are employees of Clark County School District and licensed by the State of Nevada to teach JROTC.
Uniforms & Activities:
The United States Marine Corps provides all uniforms at no cost to cadets. However, these uniforms are government property and must be returned upon departure from MCJROTC. Cadets are responsible for the proper wear and maintenance of the uniform during the school year. The uniforms may only be worn for officially authorized events and for the weekly uniform inspection. MCJROTC has 15 ranks and over 30 ribbons for cadets to earn for wear on their uniforms.
Cadets are encouraged to participate in the many teams and activities including: Color Guard, Drill Teams, Youth Physical Fitness Teams, Marksmanship (Pellet Rifle) Teams, JROTC Military Balls, parades and community service projects.
PE Requirement Waived:
The first two years of MCJROTC satisfies the two-year Physical Education requirement for graduation. The third and fourth year courses are elective courses.
Obligations for Participation:
There are no military commitments or obligations for participating in Junior ROTC, but cadets completing two or more years of JROTC are offered accelerated promotion upon enlistment in the military or assisted with academy appointments and ROTC scholarships, if eligible.
Program Benefits:
- Self-discipline, self-confidence, and personal responsibility.
- Character building and sense of belonging
- Upon successful completion of two years of JROTC, graduates may be nominated for accelerated promotion to the paygrade of E-2 upon enlistment in an active or reserve component of a military service.
- Military Departments may award the paygrade of E-3 for successful completion of three academic years of JROTC.
- Cadets who have completed three years of JROTC may be entitled to one year credit at some college ROTC programs.
- Graduates may apply for the Marine Corps PLC program during the summer prior to their freshman year of college.
- Cadets may apply to the military academies in a special JROTC nomination category or request college ROTC scholarships.
